Job Description
Mechanical (Building Services) Engineer - To £48K
Quality of delivery, quality of staff, innovative projects, and a great company culture. These are the founding principles of this multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy based near Liverpool Street.
Quality runs deep through the practice, and every project is overseen by a director all the way through the various RIBA stages. They produce quality designs that are low in energy and carbon, are properly coordinated and, actually fit within the space that was allocated by the client.
In terms of recruitment, they only employ permanent staff with stable employment histories, as they would prefer to turn work away rather than employing average engineers to just churn out poor quality designs.
Innovation exists across everything they do, they analyse every completed project, compare how the building is performing in use, and then use building performance engineering to improve the next project. They also continuously research and invest in new and emerging technologies, in order to make their existing software, processes or templates more efficient.
And, they also adopt a bold approach to building design, never shying away from the opportunity of trying something totally new, to solve an issue or overcome a challenge. Recent examples include their use of stone bearing masonry rather than steel, their investment in R&D into the use of advanced phase change materials or their ability to use CLT on larger, complex structures.
In terms of culture, the founding partners remain hands on and actively encourage all employees to make suggestions on how things can be improved. They operate an open plan studio environment, with MEP Engineers siting alongside the structural engineers, civil engineers, and BIM staff, which ensures constant collaboration. They have weekly and monthly social activities, and provide all staff with an annual bonus, and an annual salary review and increase.
As an Mechanical Engineer, you'll get involved in designing and modelling a variety of low carbon, interesting buildings such as theatres, museums, galleries, schools, castles, cinemas, offices, churches, universities, and data centres.
You'll work as part of a friendly, experienced, and supportive team of around 30 engineers on one off projects, typically from concept all the way through to construction.
You will attend design team and site meetings, and liaise directly with clients, architects, and specialist external consultants. You will also carry out heating and cooling loads, size plants, ducts, or pipes, use Revit MEP to produce 3D models, and also ensure all projects adhere to CIBSE guidelines, British standards and also promote a circular economy.
Requirements
- At least two years' experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer,
- Previous experience working directly with Architects.
- Comfortable communicating technical terms, to a non-technical audience.
- Easy to work with, able to work as part of a team.

Led by a Chartered and Degree qualified Director who has worked for both consultancies and contractors, they provide a unique service offering and bridge the gap that most other consultancies are not able to provide.
As an Intermediate Mechanical Building Services Consultancy within a small business; you'll be involved in every aspect of a project. This will include working from feasibility, through detailed design, overseeing the installation or construction phases and post occupancy evaluations.
You'll learn not just how to design a building, but how every different component goes together and develop into a very well-rounded Building Services Engineer. You'll develop new skills in bidding, resource planning and allocation, project management, client management, business development, and building performance engineering.
You'll be fully supported by a hands-on director, whilst you enjoy full freedom and autonomy to lead your own projects; both technically and also from a financial point of view. So long as your projects are making good profit, you'll be rewarded with an additional bonus of around £500 (in addition to your guaranteed basic salary of up to £40K) per month.
Projects will include major decarbonisation and heat recovery projects with blue chip firms, CAT B office fit outs, surgeries, large industrial buildings and upgrades of listed and cultural buildings.
You will be fully supported in the role, but not micromanaged and enjoy the opportunity of liaising directly with architects, contractors and end users, something that just isn't available when working in large, corporate engineering consultancies.
In addition to a basic salary of up to £40K they also offer;

£48000 - £60000 per annum large projects, weekly CPD's, progression
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - To £60K 5% pension, clear progression, large projects.
Established in the UK 50 years ago, this privately owned building services engineering consultancy three offices around the UK. With building services and sustainability at their core, they specialise in the design, management and delivery of commercial, industrial, hotel, residential, logistics and retail projects.
Reporting to a hands-on Director who has been at the practice for 10 years; you'll be responsible for leading projects, mentoring a small team of Mechanical Engineers and managing key client relationships. Recently completed projects include a new HQ Commercial office which is NZC in operation (EPC A, BREEAM Excellent), a complex refurbishment to the Waldorf Hotel in London, an 8m sq. ft industrial development (Net Zero Carbon, LEED Platinum) in the midlands and new mixed-use development including 850 residential units.
As a firm that is committed to developing, retaining and promoting their employees you'll be encouraged to attend weekly CPD's, usually at least two a week. You'll be fully supported so that you can move up to a Principal level within the next 12 months and be given as much autonomy as you desire.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the HVAC design elements on multiple projects, from feasibility to construction.
- Build and maintain relationships with Clients, Architects, Contractors and external consultants.
- Assist with resource allocation and reviewing the work completed by the mechanical team.
- Carry out Site inspections; flag up any potential risks or issues to the Project Director.
- Attend client, design team and progress meetings.
- Maintain a commercial awareness on projects, ensure they remain profitable and meet the client's brief.
- Act with honesty, integrity and transparency.
- Work as part of a team of 20 MEP Design Engineers, to meet common goals.
Essential Requirements
- Clear communications skills, comfortable in a client facing role.
- At least four years' experience in a similar role, working as a Mechanical (HVAC / Building Services) Design Engineer
- Previous experience working for a consultancy or contractor, producing HVAC designs.
- Able to work in the UK, without the need to be sponsored.
- Good understanding of HVAC and Public Health Design.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll enjoy working on a range of projects such as major decarbonisation and heat recovery projects with blue chip firms, CAT B office fit outs, surgeries, and upgrades of listed and cultural buildings.
Working directly with the founding Director, a friendly and supportive Chartered Engineer (CEng, MCIBSE, MSc), you'll be responsible for leading the HVAC design elements on projects. You will be fully supported in the role, but not micromanaged. You will be given the opportunity to lead your own projects from feasibility, design, all the way through to construction. As you develop your own network and contacts (realistically over 6 - 12 months) you'll be allowed to pursue the types of projects you enjoy and choose whether you prefer collaborating with architects, contractors, or end users.
