Job Description

Sustainability Consultant (Embodied Carbon / Whole Life Carbon Assessments) To £45K Package

With a PhD and MSc in Energy and a genuine passion for addressing the Energy Performance Gap, the Director of Sustainability knows a thing or two about Embodied Carbon and Whole Life Carbon Assessments!

They are also a guest lecturer at the AA (Architectural Association School of Architecture) and have actively been contributing to decarbonising the built environment for over two decades.

Reporting to the Director of Sustainability you'll receive ongoing support and mentoring and enjoy a diverse role, as you work on a fascinating range of projects such as masterplans, low energy schools, listed building refurbishment and true, net zero carbon mixed use developments.

As a Sustainability Consultant / Sustainability Engineer you'll assist with the following.

  • IES Modelling for both Building Performance Engineering and Part L Compliance
  • Embodied Carbon / Whole Life Carbon Assessments
  • Providing support and input to the design engineers on how projects can achieve their desired BREEAM, LEED, Passivhaus or Nabers ratings.
  • Undertaking R&D activities to continue to drive innovation; and minimise the environmental impact of buildings.
  • Undertake R&D into new technologies, software or methods of construction such as prefabricated design or Digital Twin technologies.

You'll also work very closely with the inhouse team of Mechanical, Electrical, Public Health Engineers and the BIM and Revit Technicians, which will allow you to continue to develop your understanding of all elements of the built environment.

You'll enjoy a hybrid working model and the option of working from home up to two days a week and a great benefits package of 25 days leave, 5% pension, private medical insurance, payment of professional memberships and an annual salary review and annual salary increase.

With around 30 individuals based in their London studio, they offer a relaxed and friendly working environment: plenty of autonomy and the opportunity of working directly with (rather than just working for) the Director or Sustainable Design.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Building Services Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Energy, or Environmental Engineering.
  • Familiar with IESVe (Ideally Apache HVAC) or Hevacomp and One Click LCA or eTool.
  • Previous experience undertaking Whole Life-cycle Carbon Assessments as part of the GLAs requirements to support planning applications and WLC requirements.
  • Active interest in industry initiatives or events such as LETI or COP26 etc.

    I am working exclusively with a global Real Estate Consultancy, recruiting for an Intermediate Electrical Engineer to join an established M&E team consisting of some of the best Engineers in the industry, to focus on the Decarbonisation of existing buildings.

    We are keen to speak to individuals who are interested in transferring their Electrical Building Services Design skills Client- Side into the Commercial Property sector.

    The aim of decarbonisation & Net Zero team is primarily to tackle Decarbonisation of existing buildings.

    Still working within their established M&E team but focusing on Decarbonisation and Net Zero strategies across my clients managed estates & portfolio's.

    The key consideration here is the scale of the impact that you could have on the Decarbonisation of buildings across the UK and Europe.

    Essentially engineering solutions that work towards optimising client's portfolios. A strategic service offering that involves overseeing building performance evaluations, analysing data, and implementing optimisation strategies through design to enhance energy efficiency.

    What you'll do in the traditional sense:

    • Carry out full detailed design stages 0-7
    • Client advisory directly with end user clients
    • Project management & coordination with other engineering and real estate disciplines
    • Prepare specifications, reports, design drawings and budget costs to programmes

    • Client/Project management

    What you'll do in relation to Decarbonisation and Net Zero:

    • Identify and propose design interventions that will reduce energy consumption and improve performance of buildings
    • Attending sites to survey buildings to obtain information
    • Complete technical feasibility studies for sustainable design interventions. Collaborate and coordinate with other consultants
    • Manage specialist modelling consultants and collaborate with the wider team of consultants to generate the report deliverables
    • Present proposals to clients and external project team members
    • Develop design to implement proposed interventions

    In Addition to the Design requirements above, the suitable candidate would ideally have the following engineering decarbonisation experience - This is a wish list, so not all essential but gives an idea of the additional skills you could learn in the role:

    • Have a passion to take action to address climate change
    • Competent producing reports and technical studies
    • Heat pump and decarbonised/electrified heating strategy design experience
    • Refurbishment project experience
    • Have an understanding of EPC and CIBSE TM54 modelling methodology
    • Understanding of and experience on Net Zero carbon projects
    • Understanding and project experience with BREEAM assessments
    • Experience working on NABERS DFP projects or NABERS Energy
    • Experience with IES and/or TAS thermal modelling software. Understanding of inputs required
    • Low energy design expertise
    • Energy network experience
