Senior Sustainability Engineer ( R&D and Sustainability Consulting) £50 to £60K

As a recognised global leader in classical architecture, this medium sized Architectural practice are looking for a Senior Sustainability Engineer / Senior Sustainability Consultant for their London studio.

As a Senior Sustainability Engineer / Consultant you'll establish a new R&D focussed, Sustainability team in their London studio. You'll be responsible for undertaking R&D activities in sustainability, new technology, materials, modern methods of construction and building performance engineering; and then help integrate these aspects into classical and traditional buildings.

You'll use your knowledge of holistic design principals, energy efficient buildings, and embodied carbon to help educate the rest of the practice on upcoming trends, changes to legislation and help future proof their buildings.

As a Senior Sustainability Engineer / Senior Sustainability Consultant you'll be to go to person for colleagues and clients on topics such as Life Cycle Analysis, Operation Carbon, Natural Ventilation, Renewables, Sustainable Design, Phase change materials, Emerging technologies and automation.

As our first dedicated R&D focussed, Senior Sustainability Consultant you'll be instrumental in developing this offering; and of course, also instrumental in developing a team around you.

You'll drive their thought leadership in low and zero carbon building design and help our clients establish energy efficient solutions to across both traditional / classical architecture and also urban design / new build developments.

You'll carry out post-occupancy studies to check and qualify how the building is operating in use (from an energy and carbon perspective) compared to the original IES model.

Requirements

  • Degree qualified in a suitable field such as Architectural and Environmental Engineering, Building Services, Energy, Renewable Energy, Environmental or Mechanical Engineering
  • Detailed understanding embodied carbon and energy efficient retrofit options.
  • Previous experience implementing energy and carbon savings within existing buildings.
  • Comfortable presenting to clients and colleagues.
  • Good appreciation of Passivhaus, BREEAM, Well and Nabers building rating methodologies.
  • Able to discuss the importance of thermal performance, daylight/sunlight, natural ventilation, embodied carbon and onsite renewable to clients.
  • Be able to develop their "sustainability offering" within the practice and help upskill their knowledge across energy, sustainability, building physics and embodied carbon.

    As a Mechanical (Building Services) Design and Sustainability Engineer, you'll benefit from a hybrid working week. This will include working from the office, working from home, and site-based duties as you enjoy a varied role of HVAC Design, Energy Efficiency and Project Management.

    Detailed duties

    • Energy audits
      • Undertake energy audits across a range of building types.
      • Report on current energy use, occupancy levels and building use.
      • For each building, propose an energy reduction solution that is fit for purpose.
      • Collect and analyse data and then produce reports.
      • Provide a few options for clients that demonstrates the pay backs in terms of potential energy savings for a few different options.
      • Provide clients with a clear return on investment calculation, allowing them to make an informed decision.

    • HVAC Design
      • Meet with clients to understand their challenges and requirements.
      • Produce a bespoke, commercial technical proposal for each client (that includes the cost to do the design and installation by their in-house Projects Team).
      • Liaise with clients all the way through the project, keep them informed of the progress, possible risks, or possible delays.
      • Present proposals to new clients and secure repeat business.
      • Carry out QA checks of the work (I.e. design, proposals) produced by less experienced members of the inhouse design team.

    • HVAC commissioning and onsite design review
      • Attend site and verify key parameters such as air volume, temperature, humidity, and air velocity.
      • Balance air flows and pressures within systems to achieve the desired and agreed environmental design criteria.
      • Assist the BMS Engineers with creating the optimal BMS Control strategy for each building.
      • Carry out measurement and verification to ensure the predicted savings have been achieved.

    • CPD

    • Attend regular training courses ensure you stay abreast of emerging technologies or new software or trends.
    • Maintain a register of all CPD you complete with the aim of becoming a CEng with CIBSE or the IMechE.
