Job Description

This global, multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy employs over 1000 employees and has a reputation for designing sustainable and innovative buildings.

Quite uniquely their PH Team has a 100% staff retention rate. Yes, that's right, every PH Engineer that has joined over the past 20 years is still happily employed with them.

With a range of £10M to £200M commercial, residential and hotel, laboratory and university projects currently being designed from their London office, this is a great opportunity for a Senior Public Health Engineer to join one of the leaders of green building design.

Working as part of a team of five PH Engineers (3 of which are Chartered) you'll enjoy carrying out a proper "Senior" role and a lot of autonomy. This will include assist with fee bids and resource planning and taking responsibility for both the technical and the financial success of your own projects.

You will be responsible for producing concept and detail design of water services including above ground drainage, sanitation and surface water drainage, grey and rain water harvesting, solar thermal hot water heating, fire services such as reels, hydrants and sprinklers.

Other duties will include;

  • Producing PH Design proposals independently.
  • Managing technical support staff who may assist in the development of design information
  • Managing work commitments to meet deadlines
  • Attend site and undertake surveys of engineering services installations for design development purposes
  • Survey, investigate and comment on operational issues, under performance and condition of installations and then diagnose problems.
  • Thinking creatively, objectively and be able to innovate.
  • Staying abreast of current and future technologies and understand how these could be integrated into design strategies.

Whilst not essential, previous experience with boosted water services a working knowledge of Revit and Navis works would be advantageous.

    As a Mechanical (Building Services) Design and Sustainability Engineer, you'll benefit from a hybrid working week. This will include working from the office, working from home, and site-based duties as you enjoy a varied role of HVAC Design, Energy Efficiency and Project Management.

    Detailed duties

    • Energy audits
      • Undertake energy audits across a range of building types.
      • Report on current energy use, occupancy levels and building use.
      • For each building, propose an energy reduction solution that is fit for purpose.
      • Collect and analyse data and then produce reports.
      • Provide a few options for clients that demonstrates the pay backs in terms of potential energy savings for a few different options.
      • Provide clients with a clear return on investment calculation, allowing them to make an informed decision.

    • HVAC Design
      • Meet with clients to understand their challenges and requirements.
      • Produce a bespoke, commercial technical proposal for each client (that includes the cost to do the design and installation by their in-house Projects Team).
      • Liaise with clients all the way through the project, keep them informed of the progress, possible risks, or possible delays.
      • Present proposals to new clients and secure repeat business.
      • Carry out QA checks of the work (I.e. design, proposals) produced by less experienced members of the inhouse design team.

    • HVAC commissioning and onsite design review
      • Attend site and verify key parameters such as air volume, temperature, humidity, and air velocity.
      • Balance air flows and pressures within systems to achieve the desired and agreed environmental design criteria.
      • Assist the BMS Engineers with creating the optimal BMS Control strategy for each building.
      • Carry out measurement and verification to ensure the predicted savings have been achieved.

    • CPD

    • Attend regular training courses ensure you stay abreast of emerging technologies or new software or trends.
    • Maintain a register of all CPD you complete with the aim of becoming a CEng with CIBSE or the IMechE.

    We are keen to speak to individuals who are interested in transferring their Electrical Building Services Design skills Client- Side into the Commercial Property sector.

    The aim of decarbonisation & Net Zero team is primarily to tackle Decarbonisation of existing buildings.

    Still working within their established M&E team but focusing on Decarbonisation and Net Zero strategies across my clients managed estates & portfolio's.

    The key consideration here is the scale of the impact that you could have on the Decarbonisation of buildings across the UK and Europe.

    Essentially engineering solutions that work towards optimising client's portfolios. A strategic service offering that involves overseeing building performance evaluations, analysing data, and implementing optimisation strategies through design to enhance energy efficiency.

    What you'll do in the traditional sense:

    In Addition to the Design requirements above, the suitable candidate would ideally have the following engineering decarbonisation experience - This is a wish list, so not all essential but gives an idea of the additional skills you could learn in the role:

    • Have a passion to take action to address climate change
    • Competent producing reports and technical studies
    • Heat pump and decarbonised/electrified heating strategy design experience
    • Refurbishment project experience
    • Have an understanding of EPC and CIBSE TM54 modelling methodology
    • Understanding of and experience on Net Zero carbon projects
    • Understanding and project experience with BREEAM assessments
    • Experience working on NABERS DFP projects or NABERS Energy
    • Experience with IES and/or TAS thermal modelling software. Understanding of inputs required
